Oppo, I need your help finding an FM transmitter for in-car use, but my requirements may make this impossible...
- must have a battery or usb power, because the power sockets (cigarette lighters) in my car are dead, but I have plenty of high-powered usb ports
- must not require an aux-in port on the radio, because I ain’t got one
All the devices I’ve seen so far are either powered by the lighter socket, or use an aux port, but none seem to match my needs.
Any help/ideas? Thank you!
Update: i found one, finally!

I have 2 of these, and they work great. You’d have to get your 12v outlet fixed though. Have you checked the fuses?

There’s a short somewhere in the circuit, the moment it draws power the fuse blows. I pulled apart the centre console when I was wiring in the USB and saw no obvious damage to the socket or the wiring immediately around it.
The circuit originally blew after having run an air compressor for too long. I suspect that, if I pull all the wiring I’ll find something melted.
Thanks for the tip on the device.

I ordered this, but it hasn’t come in yet. It hardwires to the antenna line with an adapter, so it doesn’t broadcast over the air. It’s also suppose to block out FM signal from the car antenna when on, but since it doesn’t have a FM receiver itself, it shouldn’t get interference from radio wave, or at least not as much.
So basically you get better sound quality than a FM transmitter, since no signal is getting broadcast over the air.

You hard wire it for power, but I think I’m just gonna tap a fuse like I did back when I had a dashcam.

Huh, I was looking for one of these too but couldn’t find one that was USB. I think my requirement was also that it must ship Amazon 1day or same day as well. So it sorted out this one. I picked up one that has the socket attached, like most of these do. It seems to work decently for me since my commute goes through/next to mountains mostly so FM signal is pretty shitty there. This makes a transmitter work decently. I am very happy to not have to constantly swap out Cds anymore. Plus having Google maps over the car speakers is great. Replacing the head unit is obviously the best solution but I like the stock look and I like to lower the risk of theft.

Now that’s an interesting device! If I understand correctly, it sits between the antenna and the stereo, but when you tune into the selected freq it plays what you input to the aux jack instead?

Look on ebay, you can probably find an OEM replacement socket and it’s harness for your car for less than $20.

You’re probably right, but I won’t have time to do any wiring before the trip. I pretty much don’t need the socket for anything any more, in any case. Everything is usb-powered nowadays!

My god, you can find anything on eBay...
I won’t be buying that: I’d have a 12V electrical system being down-coverted to 5V for USB, and then up-converted to 12V for the socket adapter! I found a product that should work (see update at the end of the original post).
